TOP 10 FOOTBALLERS IN THE WORLD

Cristiano Ronaldo

After the season Cristiano Ronaldo just had with Manchester United it would be hard to deny him top spot on the list of the top 10 footballers in the world today. He scored a mind-boggling 42 goals for the club this year, the 3rd highest total in club history. At the age of 23 he has already accomplished more than many great footballers have accomplished in an entire career. He has won numerous individual awards to go along with 2 Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League crown, and an F.A. Cup title. He was a runner-up with Portugal in the 2004 Euro Cup final. With much more individual and team success ahead of him, there is no question that at the end of his career Cristiano Ronaldo will be remembered as one of the greatest footballers of all time.

2 - Ronaldinho

Perhaps the best known footballer in the world, this modest Brazilian superstar is a no-brainer for a high spot on the list of the top 10 football players in the world today. Ronaldinho's football skills are unsurpassed as anyone who has watched a video of his practice can tell you. He has twice been named the Fifa World Footballer of the year. He has been dominant at both the club and international football level with 2 Spanish Liga football titles, a Champions League crown, and a Fifa World Cup title with Brazil in 2002.

3 - Kaka

Kaka dominates the game from the midfield position. He currently stars for storied A.C. Milan and in 2007 was named European Footballer of the Year. Even that great honor was topped when he was named Fifa World Footballer of the year.

4 - Michael Essien

This superstar footballer for perennial powerhouse Chelsea seems to be everywhere on the pitch at once, controlling and dominating the game like few in the sport of football. He has already been thrice nominated as the Fifa World Player of the Year, a true honor and testament to his football skills, and has helped Chelsea to an F.A. Cup title, a Premier League championship, and an English League Cup during his time with the legendary football club.

This Cameroonian football striker may play in the giant shadows of Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry on the tremendously talent-laden F.C. Barcelona, but he is a true superstar footballer in his own right, and is an easy selection as one of the top 10 football players in the world. Though he is known for his fiery attitude and ego, Eto'o has always performed on the pitch, piling up 79 goals for F.C. Barcelona over the past 4 seasons.

6 - Steven Gerard

This superstar midfielder for Liverpool lands at the number 6 spot of the top 10 football players in the world. The English are absolutely rabid about their football, and Gerard is the best of the current crop of footballers from that nation. He currently captains the legendary Liverpool squad, and has twice been named Premier League MVP. He has scored more than his fair share of goals during his time there, including 23 in the 2005-06 campaign, a staggering total for a midfielder.

7 - Gigi Buffon

The first keeper to make the list of the top 10 football players in the world, Gigi Buffon tends the goal for the Italian national team, as well as starring for club team, Juventus. The peak of his international career came during World Cup 2006, when he went 453 minutes without allowing a goal. He went on to help Italy win the World Cup of football that year, allowing only 2 goals, one of which was an own-goal, and the other on a penalty kick.

He has since moved on to Barcelona where he managed to lead the team in goals this season, despite being moved to the wing.

This Italian superstar is the all time leading goal scorer for club team, A.S. Roma with 165 career goals. He scored an incredible 26 goals for the club in the 2006-2007 season which won him the European Golden Boot as Europe's greatest goal scorer that year. Known for his flamboyant goal scoring celebrations as well as his goals, Totti is one of the greatest characters in the game today.

10 - Wayne Rooney

This Manchester United striker became the youngest player to ever score a goal in the Premiership, notching his first while he was still 16 years old. This young prodigy wouldn't stop there, really making a name for himself at Euro 2004, scoring 4 goals in 3 group games for England. Rooney's talent was such that Manchester United, known for landing many of football's bright young stars, paid to acquire him. He proved that their decision was a good one, scoring a hat trick in his first game with the club. Though he has been somewhat inconsistent throughout his career, when he is at the top of his game, he is one of football's most lethal strikers, enough to squeak into the number 10 spot on the list of the top 10 football players in the world.
